Thanksgiving Day

Hallo my students! This text is about a very important celebration in the USA. Let’s see something about its origins and traditions and how it is celebrated. Maybe we can find an important message in it, because everyone must be thankful for something in life.

Its origin: The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 as thanks for their first good harvest for the Pilgrims: the first European settlers in America and the founders of the English Colony ‘Plymouth’ (in present day Massachusetts).

Today’s celebration: Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November (and Canadians on the second Monday of October).

It is a public holiday and lots of people take a long weekend. ‘Black Friday’, the Friday after Thanksgiving is traditionally the start of the Christmas shopping season. For Thanksgiving, families eat roast turkey, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie.
