Hallo my students, in English we use two different forms to talk about an action that started in the past and is still continuing in the present, let’s see the difference.

Differenza d’uso tra Present Perfect Simple e Present Perfect Progressive
Il Present Perfect Simple si usa per:
1. Azione appena terminata di breve durata:
Damn! I’ve broken the window pane
2. Indica il risultato presente di un’azione iniziata nel passato:
I have done my homework, so now I can go out.
3. Duration Form: struttura tipica della lingua inglese, indica un’azione che nasce nel passato e perdura nel presente:
- Con i verbi di stato che esprimono condizioni, percezioni e abilità come know, be, like, understand e che non accettano la forma progressiva:
I’ve been here for three hours.
- Con i verbi alla forma negativa
It hasn’t rained since Monday.
4. Per situazioni stabili nel tempo:
I’ve known John since 1990.
5. Quando si quantifica l’attività specificando la quantità:
I’ve been writing songs since 8 am. I’ve written four so far.
Il Present Perfect Progressive si usa per:
1. Azione appena terminata di lunga durata:
She has been swimming for two hours.
2. Azione di lunga durata ancora in corso:
What have you been doing? – I have been doing my homework.
3. Duration Form:
- Con i verbi di azione e movimento (write, play, clean) che accettano la forma progressiva per sottolineare la continuità dell’azione:
We have been dancing since 8 pm.
4. Per sottolineare la continuità dell’azione che ha delle conseguenze nel presente:
I’m exhausted! I’ve been driving all night.
A volte si può usare indifferentemente il Present Perfect Simple e il Present Perfect Progressive:
I’ve studied/ I’ve been studying English for five years.
He has worked/ he has been working here for a year.
