Hallo my students, today I’m going to show you when we use these two verb forms and how we can combine them together in the same sentence. Enjoy this lesson 🙂

Il Past Continuous si usa:
-per descrivere un’azione che si stava svolgendo in un determinato momento nel passato
ex: Tom was in the garden yesterday morning. He was watering the flowers.
– oppure per più azioni che erano in corso simultaneamente
ex: I was reading while John was watching TV.
-Per esprimere una condizione temporanea nel passato
ex: I was living in London at that time.
– in italiano si traduce con stare + il gerundio.
Il Past Continuous e il Past Simple possono essere usati nella stessa frase. Di solito si usa il Past Continuous per esprimere un’azione lunga in svolgimento interrotta da un’altra azione più breve
ex: I was working when the telephone rang.
Con questo tipo di costruzione si possono usare gli avverbi di tempo When o While:
Si usa while prima di un verbo al Past Continuous, seguito nella frase successiva dal Past Simple:
While + Past Continuous, + Past Simple
ex: While we were looking out of the cafè window, we saw them.
Si usa when prima di un verbo al Past Simple:
Past Continuous, + when + Past Simple
I was having a shower when my mum called me.
