we use them to express ``Possibility``
I verbi ausiliari modali (modal auxiliary verbs) corrispondenti ai verbi servili italiani, sono quei verbi che esprimono le varie modalità relative a potere, dovere, volere: possibilità, permesso, obbligo, necessità, volontà.
Vengono denominati come ausiliari perché sono seguiti sempre da un verbo. Sono conosciuti anche come difettivi, perché mancano di alcuni modi e tempi.

MAY
Il permesso formale
Es: Excuse me, sir. May I open the window? Yes, you may!
La probabilità che qualcosa accada. Corrisponde all’italiano “può darsi che”.
Es: Look at those clouds. It may rain. (può darsi che piova)
In questo senso equivale a “forse”: perhaps, maybe it will rain.
LA STRUTTURA
Forma affermativa:
Soggetto + may + infinito senza to + complementi.
Es.
I may go to the toilet.
Forma Negativa:
sogg.+ may+ not + infinito senza to+ complementi:
Es.
You may not borrow my pen.
Forma Interrogativa:
May + Sogg + infinito senza to + complementi
Es.
May I make a local call? Of course. It’s next to the stairs.
MIGHT
Copre gli stessi significati di may esprimendo:
Una maggiore improbabilità. Corrisponde all’italiano “potrebbe darsi che”.
Es: Can you come to the party on Saturday? I don’t know yet. I might come.
Ita: (Puoi venire alla festa sabato? Non lo so ancora. Potrebbe darsi che venga)

Forma affermativa:

You might come with me.
Forma Negativa:
sogg.+ might + not + infinito senza to+ complementi:
She might not go to the University.
Forma Interrogativa:
Might + Sogg + infinito senza to + complementi
Might they arrive on the 8:00 train? Yes, they might.
