Tour by London

Hallo my students, today we are going to learn something about three very important places to visit in London: The British Museum, Buckingham Palace and Harrods.

THE BRITISH MUSEUM

The-British-MuseumThe British Museum is dedicated to human history, art and culture, and is located in the Bloomsbury area of London.

Its permanent collection, numbering some 8 million works, is among the largest and most complete in existence and originates from all continents, illustrating and documenting the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present.

Although today principally a museum of cultural art objects and antiquities, the British Museum was founded as a “universal museum”. The museum houses collections of natural history, and the books and manuscripts and preserves its universality in its collections of artefacts representing the cultures of the world, ancient and modern.

BUCKINGHAM PALACE

imgresBuckingham Palaceis the London residence and administrative headquarters of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is often at the centre of state occasions and royal hospitality. It has been a focal point for the British people at times of national rejoicing and mourning.

Originally known as Buckingham House, the building at the core of today’s palace was a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703. The palace has 775 rooms, and the garden is the largest private garden in London. The state rooms, used for official and state entertaining, are open to the public each year for most of August and September, and on some days in winter and spring.

Buckingham Palace became the principal royal residence in 1837, on the accession of Queen Victoria, who was the first monarch to reside there. The Forecourt of Buckingham Palace is used for Changing of the Guard, a major ceremony and tourist attraction (daily from April to July).

HARRODS

Harrods is a luxury department store located on Brompton Road in Knightsbridge, London. It is owned by the state of Qatar.

The store occupies a 5-acre site and has 330 departments covering one million square feet (90,000 m2) of retail space.

The Harrods motto is Omnia Omnibus Ubique, which is Latin for “all things for all people, everywhere”. Several of its departments, including the seasonal Christmas department and the food halls, are well known.
